Subject: Franklin EUTH FRI 4PM TWELVE Held-over dogs, tiny shelter! ONLY ONE RESCUE PENDING!

The first TWELVE dogs shown here have been held over since last week and most, if not all, will be euthanized Friday afternoon, Oct 1st, at 4PM.  County policy only allows dogs three days to get adopted as the shelter is so small ( 8 runs) - but the caring two woman staff loves their charges so much, they always try to give them as much extra time as they can.

This shelter has not had to euthanize one healthy adoptable dog this yea! Not one! Please cross-post and help them keep this record.

Needs a few good meals and a hug or two...

Owners Hummmmm. Man in jail, wife didn't want. What a life for this sweet girl. She is full of fleas and very thin. All she wants is someone to play, love and take care of her. She is in with another dog and gets along with him just fine. Such a young girl full of life to just be put on a chain and then dumped like she was nothing of value. Please help her know what really love is.

ADOPTERS

Call and speak to Kaylene or Angela to get total adoption fee which will include rabies and spay/neuter. Western Union the fee and they will take your dog or cat to the vet for you. You will need to arrange to have your pet picked up from the shelter ASAP after he or she returns from the vet.

 RESCUES
You do not have to have a GA license to rescue from Heard Co. They accept out of state licenses and/or 501c paperwork. Paperwork must be on file with Heard Co for you to pull an animal. Please fax your paperwork and follow up with a phone call to put a hold on a specific animal(s).

VOLUNTEERS
Heard Co has almost no volunteers on the ground. Two ladies, sometimes with the help of a trustee, do the intake, petfinder, feeding, cleaning, transport to vet, release, and euthanizing. If you can help out by visiting Heard and photographing and interacting with the animals please reply to the current volunteers:

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW CAN'T HURT YOU
(but it kills them)
WHAT IS ANIMAL CONTROL?

Contrary to what some people believe, Animal Control  shelters are not the same as humane societies or rescue organizations. Animal Control is primarily designed to control stray pet populations in cities and towns. These shelters hold animals for a certain number of days before they are killed. People who surrender their pets are often under the mistaken belief that their pets will be held until they find a loving home with someone else. However, these pets are often the first to be euthanized, many times the very same day. In the US, 800 dogs and cats are destroyed by AC facilities every hour.

Euthanasia is defined as the act of inducing humane death, free of pain, stress and fear. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, painless death to an animal should result in rapid unconsciousness followed by a loss of brain function. Many private and city animal shelters euthanize unwanted pets with sodium pentobarbital, a controlled substance. When the substance is injected into a dog or cat's vein, animals usually die in seconds, usually without pain or suffering - however when large numbers are euthanized at once, many dogs or cats often sense at once what is going to be done as soon as they enter the Euthanasia Room and panic.
Gas chambers are often used by shelters that do not have the funding or a veterinarian/trained personnel on staff to administer sodium pentobarbital. Gas chambers are also less expensive for the city so there is less motivation to change. Gas chambers are not considered humane. Click here to read "I put dogs in the gas chamber."
